Outdoor Objectives

Eyestrain. Back pain. Carpal tunnel. Sure signs of too much time in front of the computer.

Da Vinci said, “To remain constantly at work will cause you to lose power.” Here in Athens County we know nothing works out those kinks like playing in the fresh air. And it’s not something we only do 2 weeks a year.

Biking, hiking, golfing, kayaking. They’re all 10 minutes away and accessible before work, after work or on your lunch hour. And the weekends? Imagine what you can accomplish in two days!

From a leisurely stroll to extreme sports, whatever your speed, you’ll enjoy the ride.

Cycling

“Are you a road racer or a mountain biker?”

Forget the traditional divisions. In Athens County, you’ll want to do both.

Our back roads are windy and picturesque with minimal vehicle traffic. The toughest decision is which route to take. Luckily, the independently owned Cycle Path Bicycle Shop has a comprehensive list of options. Or strike out on your own with an Athens Bicycle Club map.

Lake Hope State Park was voted the #1 mountain biking location in the state of Ohio and in the top 50 nationwide.

And for those who prefer flat terrain, the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway is 19 miles of bliss.

Hiking

Prefer two feet to two wheels? Southeast Ohio flora, fauna and one-of-a-kind rock formations are waiting to be discovered. Visit Athens Trails for a list of maps before heading out for a few hours, a day or even a week.

Water Sports

Float along on our gentle lakes in a kayak, canoe, raft or tube. We have several to choose from: Dow Lake at Strouds Run State Park, Lake Snowden, Lake Hope or Burr Oak Lake. Each has its own personality, but they all share placid waters surrounded by the tree-covered Appalachian foothills – a must-see in the autumn months. Don’t be afraid to take along your fishing pole.
